Second Chance to See: “Through Our Eyes”
Art Photography Exhibit by Pacoima Teens
at House of Brews San Fernando
(San Fernando, CA) What does Pacoima look like when viewed through the eyes of eight youth who live there? The answer will appear at a photography exhibit, “Through Our Eyes” running until October 17, 2011, at House of Brews Espresso Lounge & Art Gallery located at 231 North Maclay Avenue in San Fernando, 91340.
The young photographers who will be showcased are all participants in EL Nido Family Centers’ Gang Reduction and Youth Development (GRYD) program in Pacoima. Photos of Pacoima and portions of Los Angeles will be available for collectors with a percentage of the donation going to the individual artist and the remainder being used for class supplies.
The work represents the culmination of a photography program taught by photographer, Richard Doran. The students worked with digital SLR cameras, and covered all aspects of photography from shutter speed, ISO and aperture to composition and lighting techniques.
Curator for the House of Brews Espresso Lounge & Art Gallery, Diana Correa, said this of the students' work, "I selected these amazingly talented young artists to underscore the wealth of creativity here in the Northeast San Fernando Valley.
"We're very pleased to exhibit artists from our surrounding communities" said Blanca Bravo-Diaz, owner of the House of Brews. Bravo-Diaz is very generously hosting the reception and providing the space for the young artists.
GRYD is funded through the Office of the Mayor, City of Los Angeles. Program goals are to reduce gang participation by identifying youth (10–15) who are at high risk for joining gangs. A key strategy is to link youth and families with a broad range of services, engaging them in constructive activities, connecting them with positive social supports and empowering them as agents of change. GRYD serves youth and families living in the Pacoima/Foothill region of the northeast San Fernando Valley.
The exhibit will run during House of Brews’ business hours on Tuesday, September 27 through Monday, October 17 at 231 North Maclay Avenue in San Fernando, 91340. Admission is free, donations welcome. Parking available.
